The 13 colleges whose capital funding bids were approved by the Learning and Skills Council last month will have to cut costs by nearly £50 million if the projects are to go ahead. The LSC approved £574m of spending for a budget of only £500m, after seven colleges received the same score in the assessment of projects by PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

A Public Accounts Committee report examines the progress on the programme of renewal of the physical infrastructure of further education colleges in England and recommends the Learning and Skills Council needs to monitor closely the financial health of some colleges, particularly those that have borrowings that exceed 40 per cent of their annual income. It also suggests that delayed college schemes could be bundled together with Building Schools for the Future projects to get them off the ground.
