Education (Student Support) (Amendment) Regulations 2008

In force - February 28, 2008 These Regulations amend the Education (Student Support) Regulations 2007 (SI 2007/176), which provide for financial support for students taking designated higher education courses in respect of an academic year beginning on or after September 1, 2007. The Regulations provide that a student who is a prisoner during any part of the academic year is not eligible for any part of the full-time student support package, with the exception of tuition fee support and disabled students' allowance. No further payments of maintenance grants or loans are due to a student who had previously been eligible for such support before the coming into force of these Regulations.
A modern legal framework for charities comes into force

On April 1, 2008 the fourth commencement order for the Charities Act 2006 was made. It includes the new statutory definition of "charity" and various accounting and reporting changes to bring the legal framework for charities up to date. The Charities Act 2006 (Commencement No.4, Transitional Provisions and Savings) Order 2008 also includes the removal of the presumption of public benefit for charities established for the advancement of education, the relief of poverty or the advancement of religion and a requirement for charity trustees to have regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit.

In force - Bringing into operation various provisions of the 2007 Act on February 21, 2008 and September 1, 2008 This Order brings into force provisions of the Further Education and Training Act 2007 which relate to: the minimum membership of the Learning and Skills Council for England (LSC); the abolition of local learning and skills councils and the repeal of provisions in the Learning and Skills Act 2000 relating to them; strategies for functions of the LSC; and the repeal of the duty on the LSC to establish a young people's learning committee and an adult learning committee.
Regional Learning and Skills Councils Regulations 2008

In force - March 19, 2008 These Regulations make provision about regional learning and skills councils established under the Learning and Skills Act 2000 s.18A(1) for areas of England specified by the Secretary of State. They make provision about the membership of regional councils and the method of appointment of their members including the chairman; make provision about the holding and vacation of office as a member or chairman of a regional council; make provision about the payment by the Council of such salaries and such travelling, subsistence and other allowances to the chairman and other members of regional councils as determined by the Secretary of State; make provision about the appointment of staff to regional councils; make provision about the delegation of regional council functions; and make provision about regional council proceedings.
